Is Your Body Running on Empty? STRESS AWARENESS MONTH

What Stress Is Really Doing to You.

Fatigue, brain fog, and that wired-but-exhausted feeling aren't just "life" — they're your body asking for help.

April is Stress Awareness Month — and if you've landed here, there's a good chance you already know something isn't quite right. Perhaps you're exhausted before the day has even properly started. Perhaps you're running on caffeine and willpower, and wondering why rest just doesn't seem to restore you any more.

Here's something that might surprise you: stress isn't just the thing you feel when your inbox is overflowing or life gets overwhelming. Stress, in the biological sense, is anything that places a burden on your body — and it shows up in more ways than most of us realise.

"Stress is anything that places a burden on your body — and it shows up in more ways than most of us realise."

The stressors you might not be thinking about;

When we talk about stress in functional medicine, we look at the full picture. That includes the obvious stuff — work pressure, family demands, difficult life events — but also the quieter, biological stressors that quietly chip away at your health day after day:

* Chronic inflammation

* Blood sugar swings

* Environmental toxins

* Poor sleep quality

* Lack of daylight

* Nutritional gaps

These stressors place real, measurable pressure on your body's systems — and over time, they take a significant toll. One of the first systems to feel it? Your adrenal glands.

Your adrenal glands sit just above your kidneys, and they have a pretty important job: producing hormones that help you respond to stress, regulate your blood pressure, balance your blood sugar, and keep your energy on an even keel. The key player here is cortisol — your body's primary stress hormone.

In small, well-timed doses, cortisol is incredibly useful. It helps you get out of bed in the morning, think clearly under pressure, and respond to challenges. But when stress is chronic and unrelenting, cortisol levels can stay persistently elevated — and that's where things start to unravel.

This state — sometimes called adrenal cortical hyperfunction — isn't the same as a clinical diagnosis like Cushing's syndrome, but it's far from "normal" either. It sits in that frustrating grey zone where you know something isn't right, yet routine tests often come back fine. Sound familiar?

What does this actually feel like?

Persistently high cortisol can affect almost every corner of your health. You might recognise some of these:

* Constant fatigue

* Poor sleep or waking at 3am

* Brain fog

* Weight gain (especially around the middle)

* Craving sugar or caffeine

* Feeling wired but exhausted

* Blood sugar dips

* Elevated blood pressure

* Catching every bug going

* Feeling overwhelmed easily

If several of those ring true, your body isn't broken — it's been under pressure for too long, and it's asking for support.

The good news? Adrenal dysregulation is not a life sentence. With the right approach — looking at the whole person, not just the symptoms — it is absolutely possible to feel well again. Real, sustained energy. Clearer thinking. Better sleep. A sense of calm that doesn't depend on your to-do list being empty.

From a Functional Naturopathic Medicine perspective, rebalancing your adrenal health means addressing the root causes — not just managing symptoms. That might look different for everyone, but typically includes:

Nourishing your nervous system through food — stabilising blood sugar is one of the most powerful things you can do for your adrenals. That means eating regularly, including plenty of protein and healthy fats, and reducing the blood sugar spikes that send cortisol surging.

Targeted nutritional support — certain nutrients are essential for healthy adrenal function, including magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin C, and specific adaptogenic herbs. Getting the right support, in the right forms and doses, can make a meaningful difference.

Addressing the lifestyle pieces — sleep, movement, light exposure, and stress management aren't optional extras. They're the foundation. Small, consistent changes in these areas can have a profound effect on how your body handles stress.

And for those who want to go deeper — lab testing. Sometimes, knowing exactly what's happening under the surface makes all the difference. We can look at your cortisol rhythm throughout the day, your sex hormones, thyroid function, inflammation markers, blood sugar regulation, and more. Testing takes the guesswork out of it and allows us to build a truly personalised plan.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

If you've been pushing through, telling yourself this is just how it feels to be an adult in a busy world — I want to gently challenge that. Exhaustion, overwhelm, and that flat, depleted feeling are incredibly common, but they are not inevitable. Your body has an extraordinary capacity to heal when given the right conditions.

Whether you're ready to dive deep with comprehensive testing or simply want to start with a conversation about where to begin — I'm here for all of it.

There's no one-size-fits-all approach, and there's no pressure. Just a chance to look honestly at what's going on and work out the best path forward for you.
